Oval LED Bathroom Mirrors — Framed Designer Series

Oval LED Bathroom Mirrors — The Case for a Framed Designer Format

Oval bathroom mirrors occupy a specific position in the current specification landscape — neither as minimal as a round halo mirror nor as architecturally structured as an arch or rectangular format. The oval shape carries an inherent softness that suits bathrooms where the brief is warm and considered rather than stark or industrial. In the VUELUXE range, the oval format is represented by the VLFR-01, a framed designer mirror with a brushed aluminium extrusion frame, 5mm copper-free glass, and the same CCT tuning system as the rest of the range.

This page covers the VLFR-01 specification in full, the material logic behind aluminium framing in a bathroom context, the design applications where oval outperforms other formats, and the practical considerations for trade buyers specifying the VLFR-01 across residential and hospitality projects.

VLFR-01 Specification

The VLFR-01 is VUELUXE’s oval framed mirror. Its dimensions — 800mm wide by 600mm tall by 40mm deep — place it in the medium-size category, suited to a 750mm to 900mm vanity width. The 40mm frame depth is slightly deeper than the 35mm profile used on the round models, reflecting the additional driver housing required for the oval format’s higher wattage output.

At 28W, the VLFR-01 sits between the 18W VLM-02 and the 30W VLM-04 in terms of light output. The oval format distributes this output along both the horizontal and vertical perimeter of the glass, producing a halo that wraps the full circumference of the shape. The wider horizontal dimension (800mm) means the horizontal sections of the halo are longer and contribute more visible light than on a 700mm round mirror.

Full product details are listed on the VLFR-01 product page.

Frame Construction — Brushed Aluminium Extrusion

The VLFR-01 frame is formed from a continuous aluminium extrusion that follows the oval perimeter of the glass. This is distinct from a timber or MDF frame, which would require joinery at the curves and would be vulnerable to humidity-driven expansion and delamination. Aluminium extrusion is a single-material, single-process construction — the frame profile is drawn through a die to produce a consistent cross-section, then bent to the oval geometry using a CNC profile bender.

The result is a frame without joints, visible seams, or timber substrate that can absorb moisture. In a bathroom environment where relative humidity routinely reaches 80–100 percent during shower use, this matters. Timber and MDF-based mirror frames have a finite service life in high-humidity rooms regardless of the finish applied — the substrate eventually moves, causing paint or laminate to crack and lift at the edges.

Aluminium does not move with moisture. The brushed finish on VUELUXE frames is an anodised or powder-coated surface treatment applied over the aluminium substrate, and both processes produce a finish that is chemically bonded to the metal rather than sitting on top of it as a film. This means the frame finish will not peel, bubble, or delaminate under normal bathroom use.

Brushed Black vs Brushed Gold — Frame Finish Selection

The VLFR-01 is available in two frame finishes: brushed black aluminium and brushed gold aluminium. Both use the same base extrusion; the finish difference is applied at the surface treatment stage. The choice is typically driven by the tapware and accessory finish in the bathroom, with the mirror frame expected to match or complement the dominant metallic tone.

Brushed Black

Brushed black suits contemporary bathrooms with a darker, more graphic palette. Matte black tapware, dark grout, concrete-look or charcoal tile, and black hardware all work well against a brushed black mirror frame. The oval shape in brushed black reads as restrained and modern — the gentle curve softens what could otherwise be a very hard palette. Against a white subway tile or large-format marble-look tile, the black frame creates a strong focal point above the vanity.

Brushed Gold

Brushed gold is the more widely specified finish for the VLFR-01 in the hospitality and luxury residential segments. The warm metallic tone of the frame works with terrazzo, Calacatta marble-look tile, warm-toned natural stone, and timber veneer vanities. Brushed gold tapware — increasingly the dominant tapware finish in Australian luxury residential — creates a unified material palette when paired with a brushed gold mirror frame. The oval shape in brushed gold has a deliberate, considered quality that sits well in a feature bathroom brief.

For a direct comparison of the two finishes across projects, the round LED mirrors page also covers frame finish selection in the context of the VLM-02 and VLM-04.

The 5mm Edge Profile — Detailing at the Frame Junction

The glass in the VLFR-01 is 5mm copper-free silvered glass with a polished edge where it meets the aluminium frame. This 5mm edge is visible as a thin line between the mirror surface and the frame extrusion — a detail that reads differently in brushed black versus brushed gold. In brushed gold, the silver glass edge creates a subtle contrast line that defines the mirror boundary. In brushed black, the contrast is sharper, emphasising the frame as a distinct element.

The 5mm thickness is the standard for quality bathroom mirrors in Australia. Thinner glass — 3mm or 4mm — is used in some lower-cost products but is more susceptible to flex during installation and handling, and the thinner substrate limits the quality of the silvering process. VUELUXE specifies 5mm throughout the range as a minimum, regardless of format.

Why Oval Is Having a Design Moment

The increased specification of oval mirrors in Australian bathrooms over the past three years reflects a broader shift in interior design away from strictly rectilinear compositions. Bathrooms that previously defaulted to rectangular mirrors above rectangular vanities are now being specified with a greater mix of geometries — a curved bath, a round mirror, an arched niche — to create visual rhythm and reduce the box-like quality of a tiled room.

The oval is a specific choice within this shift. Unlike a round mirror, which reads as symmetrical in all directions, the oval has a directional quality — it is wider than it is tall, which suits the horizontal layout of a bathroom vanity more naturally. An 800mm wide by 600mm tall oval mirror sits above an 800mm vanity with a proportional logic that a 700mm round mirror does not quite achieve at that width.

In hospitality design, oval mirrors have appeared consistently in boutique hotel bathroom specifications for the past several years, where the brief typically calls for a format that is recognisably premium without replicating the look of a standard hotel bathroom. The oval achieves this — it is unusual enough to register as a considered choice without being so unconventional as to disrupt the room.

Project Applications

Feature Bathroom

In a multi-bathroom residential project, one bathroom is often designated as the feature bathroom — typically the main or guest bathroom that receives the most considered design attention. The VLFR-01 in brushed gold is a strong specification choice for this context. At 700×700mm, it is large enough to function as a visual centrepiece above the vanity without dominating the room. The halo glow at 2700K creates a warm, ambient light that reads as intentional in a room designed for impression rather than utility.

Boutique Hotel Ensuite

Hotel bathrooms require fixtures that can sustain high-use conditions while maintaining their appearance over a multi-year service life. The VLFR-01’s aluminium frame construction and copper-free glass address both requirements. The frame will not degrade in a high-humidity environment regardless of how many guests use the bathroom, and the copper-free glass will not develop edge blackening within the typical hotel renovation cycle of seven to ten years.

For volume hotel procurement, the VLFR-01 is available in bulk quantities with consistent finish and specification across all units — a requirement that matters in a hotel context where any variation across rooms is noticeable.

Luxury Residential

In luxury residential projects — typically custom builds and high-end renovations — the oval mirror is often selected alongside an arch format in a different bathroom, or paired with a round format in the powder room. The ability to specify the same frame finish across all three formats (round framed VLFR-01, arch VLM-07, round VLM-02 or VLM-04) from a single supplier simplifies procurement and ensures material consistency throughout the project.

Light Output and CCT in the VLFR-01

At 28W, the VLFR-01 produces a strong halo output that is appropriate for use as the primary light source in a bathroom without supplementary downlighting. The 800mm horizontal spread of the halo means the light reaches the user’s face from both sides — a quality that is relevant for makeup and grooming applications where side-lit illumination is more flattering and more accurate than overhead-only downlighting.

The CCT range of 2700K to 6500K is adjustable via the integrated touch sensor. A single touch cycles through the light temperature presets; holding the sensor adjusts brightness level. This means there is no separate dimmer switch required at the wall — the mirror is self-contained for light control, which simplifies electrical roughing-in during construction.

For a full explanation of what the CCT numbers mean in practice and how to specify the right default setting for a given bathroom type, refer to the CCT specification guide.

Electrical and Installation Requirements

The VLFR-01 is a hardwired unit. The driver is integrated within the 40mm frame body, and connection to the wall circuit is made via a junction box behind the mirror. Installation requires a licensed electrician. The unit operates on 240V/50Hz and does not require a separate transformer or driver module external to the mirror body.

IP44 certification permits installation in Zone 2 of the bathroom — the standard vanity wall position in most Australian bathrooms. The 40mm frame depth should be confirmed against any planned recessed niche installation where depth constraints apply. For flush-to-tile installations on a flat wall, 40mm presents no practical clearance issue.

Wall fixings are supplied with the unit. The mounting system is a two-point bracket that attaches to the wall; the mirror body then clips onto the bracket and connects electrically at the rear. The installation sequence requires two trades — a carpenter or tile contractor to confirm the fixing point location and a licensed electrician to make the final connection.

Comparing Oval to Arch

Trade buyers specifying for feature bathrooms frequently consider both the round framed VLFR-01 and the arch VLM-07 for the same application. The key distinction is proportional: the VLFR-01 at 700×700mm is a landscape-oriented mirror — wider than it is tall. The VLM-07 arch at 550×950mm is portrait-oriented — taller than it is wide. The selection depends on the vanity width and the height of the wall above the vanity.

For a vanity with 900mm or more of vertical wall space available above it, the arch format works well and creates a sense of vertical extension in the room. For a vanity beneath a window or with a low overhead cabinet, the landscape oval is a better fit. The arch LED mirrors page covers the VLM-07 specification and project applications in detail.

Certifications and Compliance Documentation

The VLFR-01 carries SAA and RCM certification for the Australian market. This covers the electrical assembly — LED driver, strip, touch sensor, and wiring — and confirms compliance with applicable Australian standards for electrical safety in wet area installations. Certification documentation is available on request for project compliance files and certifier submissions.

For builders and project managers requiring compliance documentation for NCC submissions or council inspections, VUELUXE can provide SAA/RCM test reports and installation specifications on request as part of the trade enquiry process.
