VLM-02 vs VLM-04 — which round mirror to specify

VLM-02 vs VLM-04 — which round mirror to specify

The VLM-02 (700×700mm, 18W) suits standard ensuites and powder rooms. The VLM-04 (700×700mm, 30W) suits master ensuites and feature bathrooms. Both use identical construction — same glass, same LED specification, same frame options, same mounting system. The choice is determined entirely by vanity size and bathroom scale.

The construction is the same

VUELUXE rounds are not different products at different quality levels — they are the same product at different sizes. Both the VLM-02 and VLM-04 use:

  • 5mm silver mirror glass with sandblasted edge halo channel
  • High-efficiency SMD LED strip, CRI 90+
  • Dual CCT: 2700K warm / 4000K cool, single switch
  • Integrated demister pad (thermostatically controlled)
  • Brushed aluminium frame (black or gold)
  • Integrated keyhole mounting slots — no visible hardware
  • 1.5m AU plug cord + hardwire pigtail, both included
  • IP44 bathroom rated

The only differences are diameter (700mm vs 900mm), wattage (18W vs 30W), and weight (4.2kg vs 6.8kg). No trade-off in quality. No functional difference in the lighting technology. Size and light output scale proportionally.

When to specify VLM-02

Specify the VLM-02 when:

  • Vanity is 750–900mm wide — the 700mm diameter gives 25–100mm margin each side
  • The bathroom is a compact ensuite, standard ensuite, or powder room
  • Volume residential — the VLM-02 is the highest-stocked, fastest-delivered SKU in the range
  • The project requires a consistent specification across multiple bathroom types — the VLM-02 fits the widest range of standard Australian vanity widths

At 18W, the VLM-02 produces adequate ambient bathroom lighting for a compact ensuite. In a very large bathroom where the mirror is the primary supplementary light source, 18W may be less than ideal — which is where the VLM-04 becomes the correct specification.

When to specify VLM-04

Specify the VLM-04 when:

  • Vanity is 1200mm wide — the 900mm diameter gives 150mm margin each side, which is the proportionally correct range
  • The bathroom is a master ensuite or premium bathroom where the mirror is a design feature
  • The room is large enough that 18W of LED ambient light is insufficient to supplement ceiling lighting
  • The client is expecting a hotel-quality spec — 900mm is standard in mid-to-upper hotel room bathrooms

The VLM-04 at 30W produces noticeably more ambient light than the VLM-02. In a master bathroom where the ceiling lighting is set at a low lux level for ambience, the VLM-04’s additional light output fills the grooming zone adequately. This is the functional argument for the upgrade beyond size — light output, not just diameter.

The proportioning argument

The most common specification error is using the VLM-02 on a 1200mm master vanity because it is cheaper and simpler to keep one SKU across all bathrooms. The result is a 700mm mirror over a 1200mm bench — a 250mm margin on each side — which reads as undersized and under-specified. The master bathroom looks like a standard ensuite. For a volume builder, this is a visible downgrade signal that affects the buyer’s perception of the entire home.

The VLM-04 on a 1200mm master vanity looks correct. The 150mm margin on each side reads as considered. The larger mirror presence says “this is the master.” For the difference in mirror cost, using the VLM-04 in the master and the VLM-02 in standard ensuites is a straightforward specification decision that improves the perceived quality of the fitout.

Multi-unit project — using both SKUs

For a multi-unit development with a standard ensuite and a master ensuite per dwelling, the correct specification is:

  • Standard ensuite: VLM-02 (one per unit)
  • Master ensuite: VLM-04 (one per unit)

This is a straightforward split specification. Both SKUs are stocked in the VUELUXE warehouse. For a 50-lot development, contact VUELUXE to discuss consolidated ordering and delivery scheduling for both SKUs. Volume pricing is available to trade account holders through the round mirror range page.

Weight and fixing implications

VLM-02 at 4.2kg: standard keyhole-slot installation on stud is straightforward. Plasterboard butterfly anchors rated to 12.6kg minimum are adequate. VLM-04 at 6.8kg: stud fixing is strongly preferred. If fixing to plasterboard only, use anchors rated to minimum 20kg (3× mirror weight). The keyhole slots on both mirrors are identically designed — only the load requirement differs.

Summary

  • VLM-02 (700mm, 18W): standard ensuite, powder room, 750–900mm vanity
  • VLM-04 (700mm, back-lit): master ensuite, feature bathroom, 1200mm vanity
  • Construction is identical — the choice is about size and light output, not quality
  • Do not use VLM-02 on 1200mm master vanities — it reads as undersized
  • Both stocked; volume orders: contact VUELUXE for consolidated delivery
