Is IP44 enough for an Australian shower zone?
IP44 is sufficient for Zone 2 — the area outside the direct shower and bath splash zone where most bathroom mirrors are installed. If a mirror is mounted directly inside a shower enclosure (Zone 1 under AS/NZS 3000), IP55 or higher is required. In practice, the vast majority of bathroom mirror installations are Zone 2: above the vanity, outside the shower screen, where IP44 is the correct compliant specification.
Understanding Zone 1 versus Zone 2
The Australian/New Zealand Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000) define bathroom zones based on proximity to water sources. These zones determine the minimum IP rating required for electrical equipment installed in each area.
Zone 1 is the space that can receive direct water spray from a shower head or bath tap — specifically, the volume inside a shower enclosure or directly above a bath to 2.25m height. Any electrical fitting installed in Zone 1 must be rated IP55 minimum, meaning it must withstand a directed water jet, not just splashing.
Zone 2 is the adjacent area — extending 600mm beyond the edge of Zone 1, or on the other side of a shower screen from the water source. This is where most bathroom mirrors sit: above the vanity, facing the shower, but separated from it by the shower screen and more than 600mm from the nearest water outlet. IP44 is the minimum requirement for Zone 2.
Typical bathroom mirror placement and zone classification
In a typical Australian bathroom layout — vanity on one wall, shower on an adjacent wall — the mirror above the vanity is almost always Zone 2. The shower screen provides a physical barrier. The mirror position is typically more than 600mm from the shower water outlet. IP44 is the compliant specification.
In bathrooms with combined bath and shower (often found in older homes), or where the vanity is very close to the bath, the zone classification should be assessed by the installing electrician before specifying the mirror. In ambiguous cases, it is safer to specify IP55 — over-specifying on IP rating has no operational downside.
Wet area ensuite layouts in contemporary Australian residential design almost universally place the mirror and vanity outside Zone 1. Contemporary building standards and bathroom design conventions create physical separation between wet and dry zones that keeps mirror positions in Zone 2 by default.
What IP55 actually provides that IP44 does not
IP55 adds protection against directed low-pressure water jets from any direction. This is relevant inside a shower enclosure where water from the shower head sprays onto surfaces. IP44 is protection against water splashing from any direction — a less severe exposure that covers condensation, steam, and incidental splashes, but not directed spray.
For a mirror above a vanity in Zone 2, the exposure is always splash and steam — never directed spray. IP44 is an adequate and appropriate specification for this exposure level. Installing an IP55 mirror in Zone 2 is permitted but adds no protection benefit for the installation environment.
Who determines zone classification on a project
The installing licensed electrician is responsible for verifying zone classification and confirming the IP rating of the fixture is appropriate for the installation position. Builders and designers can specify IP44 for standard above-vanity mirror positions with confidence, but the final compliance check rests with the electrician.
For projects with non-standard bathroom layouts — very small bathrooms, shower-over-bath configurations, or mirrors mounted unusually close to a shower — ask the electrician to confirm zone classification before ordering product. This avoids specification errors that require product substitution after delivery.
VUELUXE IP rating and RCM certification
VUELUXE mirrors are rated IP44 and carry full RCM (Regulatory Compliance Mark) certification for the Australian market. The IP44 rating is independently verified — not a self-declared claim. This certification is required for a licensed electrician to legally install the product in an Australian bathroom.
VUELUXE does not currently offer an IP55 rated mirror model for Zone 1 installations. For Zone 1 requirements (inside a shower enclosure), contact the trade desk — this is an unusual requirement but can be accommodated with a custom specification discussion.
