What happens when an LED mirror’s lights fail?

LED strip failure in isolation is rare. In most cases, complete light loss on an LED mirror is caused by driver failure — the power supply unit that converts mains voltage to the LED circuit’s operating voltage. Driver replacement is possible on higher-quality mirrors with accessible driver compartments. VUELUXE’s 2-year warranty covers driver failure within the warranty period, and the 14-day no-form policy covers any defect on arrival.

The two distinct failure types

When an LED mirror stops working, it is useful to distinguish between the two main failure categories before concluding the unit needs replacement:

  • Driver failure: The power supply unit fails. This results in complete light loss — the LED strips receive no power. The touch sensor may still work (some mirrors have a separate low-power touch circuit), but nothing lights up. This is the most common failure mode in LED mirrors that are past the early-life stage.
  • LED strip failure: The LED strips themselves fail. This is less common than driver failure with quality LED components. When it does occur, it may present as sections of the mirror going dark (partial failure) or complete loss (full strip failure). LED strips in VUELUXE mirrors are rated 50,000 hours L70 — strip failure before this milestone in normal operating conditions is rare.

How to identify a driver failure

Driver failure is typically characterised by sudden, complete loss of light — the mirror was working yesterday and does not turn on today. There is no gradual dimming before failure (that is LED degradation, which happens over thousands of hours). A driver failure is usually sudden.

Before assuming driver failure, check: (1) the power outlet or switch is functional — test with another device, (2) the circuit breaker for the bathroom circuit has not tripped, (3) the connection between the mirror’s power lead and the outlet is secure. These are the most common causes of apparent “failure” that are not component failures.

If power supply is confirmed and the mirror still does not respond, the driver or touch sensor circuit is the likely cause. For units within the VUELUXE warranty period, initiate a warranty claim directly.

Driver replacement: what is and is not possible

Driver replacement is possible on some mirror designs and not others. The driver is located inside the mirror housing — typically in a sealed compartment at the back of the unit. On mirrors with an accessible rear panel or service hatch, a qualified electrician can open the housing and replace the driver with an equivalent unit.

VUELUXE mirrors are designed with this in mind. The driver housing is not permanently sealed. A licensed electrician can access and replace the driver if required. Replacement drivers for all VUELUXE models are available through the trade desk.

For mirrors where the housing is fully sealed (common in budget import products), driver replacement is not practical. The entire mirror needs replacement when the driver fails — a significantly more expensive outcome.

What causes early driver failure

VUELUXE drivers are rated 30,000–40,000 hours under normal operating conditions. Early failure (within 1–5 years) is typically caused by:

  • External dimmer switch: Connecting a mirror with an internal driver to a dimmer circuit subjects the driver to voltage instability it is not designed for. This is the most common cause of early driver failure. VUELUXE mirrors must be connected to a standard switched circuit, not a dimmer circuit.
  • Power surge: A voltage spike from a lightning event or switching surge can damage driver electrolytic capacitors. Surge protection on the circuit is the preventative measure.
  • Overheating: A driver installed in a very poorly ventilated space (fully enclosed mirror cabinet with no airflow) can overheat. VUELUXE mirrors are not designed for fully sealed enclosed cabinets.
  • Manufacturing defect: Covered by the 2-year warranty.

The 14-day no-form policy

VUELUXE’s 14-day policy covers any defect on arrival. If a mirror is delivered and has a fault — does not power on, partial LED strip failure, touch sensor unresponsive — it is replaced without a claim form or paperwork process. The replacement unit ships when the defective unit is confirmed returned or photographic evidence of the fault is provided.

This policy is designed for trade buyers managing project timelines. A mirror failing on arrival at a building site should not require a 2-week claims process. The no-form policy exists to remove that friction.

LED strip failure: partial vs total

When LED strips fail, they typically fail in segments rather than as a complete unit — a specific LED package or section of the strip fails, leaving the rest of the strip functional. This presents as a dark patch or dark strip along one edge of the mirror.

Partial strip failure within the VUELUXE warranty period is treated as a manufacturing defect claim. The mirror is replaced, not repaired in-field. LED strip replacement requires disassembly of the mirror housing and re-adhesion of the strip — a factory-level repair that is not practical in the field.
