What is the RCM mark and why does it matter?

The RCM (Regulatory Compliance Mark) is Australia’s current unified compliance mark for electrical and electronic products. It replaced the C-Tick and A-Tick marks in 2013 and is the only current valid compliance mark for new electrical products supplied to the Australian market. A product with a valid RCM mark has been tested to the relevant Australian standards by an accredited laboratory AND the supplier is registered on the ERAC (Electrical Regulatory Authorities Council) database. Builders and specifiers should verify the ERAC registration number for any electrical product — fake or self-declared RCM marks are common on Alibaba-sourced imports.

What the RCM mark means in practice

The RCM mark is a registered trademark owned by ERAC — the body that coordinates electrical safety regulation across Australian states and territories. For a supplier to use the RCM mark legally, they must be registered on the ERAC database and must have their product tested by an accredited laboratory to the applicable Australian standards.

For an LED bathroom mirror, the applicable standards are: AS/NZS 60598 (luminaire safety), AS/NZS 61347 (lamp control gear / driver safety), and CISPR 15 (electromagnetic compatibility). Testing must be conducted by a National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) accredited laboratory or an equivalent overseas accredited laboratory under a mutual recognition agreement.

The ERAC database is publicly searchable at the ERAC website. Search by supplier name or registration number to confirm that a supplier is registered. A supplier who uses the RCM mark without ERAC registration is using it illegally and their product has not met the requirements that justify the mark.

Why it matters for bathroom mirror selection

The LED driver inside a bathroom mirror is the component that converts 240V mains power to the low-voltage DC supply for the LED strip. A non-compliant driver — one that has not been tested to AS/NZS 61347 — may have inadequate insulation, incorrect current limiting, or thermal management failures. In a bathroom environment, a driver failure can result in electric shock risk, fire, or product that simply stops working well within its expected life.

For builders and specifiers, the RCM mark is the minimum documentation check for any LED bathroom mirror. It is not sufficient on its own — the ERAC registration should be verified — but a product without an RCM mark should not be installed in an Australian bathroom under any circumstances.

How to verify an RCM mark

The three-step verification process: Step 1 — confirm the RCM triangle symbol appears on the product label or packaging (the specific registered triangle symbol, not just the letters “RCM” in text). Step 2 — ask the supplier for their ERAC registration number. Step 3 — search the ERAC database and confirm the supplier’s registration is current and covers the product category (luminaires).

If a supplier cannot provide an ERAC registration number, the mark is self-declared and should not be accepted. If the ERAC database search returns no result for the supplier name, the mark is fraudulent. Both situations are more common than the industry acknowledges — verification takes 5 minutes and eliminates the compliance risk.

The difference between RCM and IP44

The RCM mark covers electrical safety standards — it does not cover IP rating performance. IP44 is a separate certification under AS/NZS 60529 / IEC 60529. A product can carry a valid RCM mark and still have an unverified or fraudulent IP44 claim. The two certifications test different things and are both required for bathroom LED mirrors.

For a complete compliance check on an LED bathroom mirror: verify the RCM mark and ERAC registration (electrical safety), and request the IP44 test report from an accredited laboratory (ingress protection). Both documents together confirm the product meets Australian requirements for bathroom use.

What happens when a fake RCM mark is discovered

If a non-compliant product is installed and the RCM mark is later found to be fraudulent, the consequences fall on the building owner and the installer. The building owner has a non-compliant electrical installation. The installer — builder or electrician — has certified the installation of a product they could not legally certify. Building insurance may not cover damage from a non-compliant installation. The builder carries defect liability for the full DLP period.

Product Safety Australia (part of the ACCC) is the enforcement body for RCM compliance. Suppliers who use fraudulent RCM marks are in breach of the Electrical Equipment Safety System (EESS) regulations. The enforcement risk sits with the importer and supplier — but the practical compliance risk sits with the builder who specified and installed the product.

VUELUXE RCM certification

VUELUXE mirrors carry a current RCM mark backed by ERAC registration and third-party laboratory test reports. The ERAC registration number is available on the compliance documentation provided to trade account holders on request. Trade accounts who need to verify VUELUXE’s compliance status for a project submission can request the full compliance package — RCM certificate, ERAC number, laboratory test reports — via the trade portal.

For detailed information on the RCM mark and how to verify supplier registration on the ERAC database, visit the SAA/RCM certification page.
