LED Bathroom Mirror Installation Guide Australia

LED Bathroom Mirror Installation Guide Australia

This guide covers the installation of VUELUXE LED bathroom mirrors for both plug-in (GPO) and hardwire (pigtail) configurations. It is written for builders, tilers, and licensed electricians involved in bathroom fit-out across Australian residential and light commercial projects. For compliance documentation and electrical zone requirements, refer to the compliance hub.

Before beginning any installation, confirm the mirror’s specification — size, fixing method, and electrical connection type — against the project schedule. Installation method varies between mirror formats. Return to the guides index for related planning resources.

Pre-Installation Requirements

Electrical Zone Confirmation

Before fixing begins, the project electrician must confirm the mirror’s installation zone under AS/NZS 3000. All VUELUXE LED mirrors are rated IP44, which satisfies zone 2 requirements as defined in the Australian wiring rules. If the mirror is to be installed within zone 1 — directly above an open bath or in an enclosed shower area — confirm with the electrician whether IP44 is sufficient for the specific application or whether an IP65-rated fitting is required. For a full explanation of IP ratings and zone boundaries, refer to the IP rating explained guide.

Wall Substrate Check

Determine the wall substrate before marking fixing positions. Bathrooms in Australian residential construction typically have one of three substrate types: timber stud frame with plasterboard lining, steel stud frame with plasterboard, or concrete/masonry block. The fixing method differs for each. Large mirrors — 900mm and above in any dimension — require fixings into studs or solid backing. Hollow-wall anchors alone are not appropriate for mirrors above approximately 8kg.

Where studs do not align with the required bracket positions, a horizontal timber noggin or 12mm moisture-resistant ply backing board should be installed between studs before wall lining is applied. This is best done at the rough-in stage before tiling. Confirm noggin or backing requirements with the builder during the frame-up phase.

Electrical Rough-In

For hardwire (pigtail) connections, the electrical rough-in must be completed before wall lining and tiling. The rough-in conduit or cable should terminate at the wall surface at a position that aligns with the mirror’s cable entry point. Confirm the cable exit position from the mirror product sheet before rough-in. For plug-in (GPO) connections, a GPO outlet within the mirror’s installation area must be in place before fitting. In most jurisdictions a GPO inside a bathroom shower zone is not permitted — confirm with the electrician.

Recommended Mirror Height

The standard recommendation for LED bathroom mirror installation in Australian residential projects is to position the centre of the mirror at 1700–1750mm above finished floor level (FFL). For a 900mm tall mirror, this places the bottom edge at approximately 1250–1300mm FFL and the top edge at approximately 2150–2200mm FFL — comfortably below standard 2400mm ceiling height.

For accessible or universal design applications, lower the centre height to 1550–1600mm FFL to improve usability from a seated position without compromising standing-use reflection for most adult heights. Accessible design requirements under AS 1428.1 should be reviewed for any project designated as accessible or adaptable housing.

For detailed height recommendations by mirror size and user profile, refer to the mounting height guide. Always measure height from finished floor level, not from the subfloor — particularly in tiled bathrooms where tile thickness adds 8–15mm to the floor height.

Installation Type 1 — Plug-In (GPO Connection)

Plug-in mirrors ship with an Australian standard 3-pin plug attached to a cable. The installation process for this type is straightforward and does not require a licensed electrician for the mirror connection itself, though the GPO outlet must have been installed by a licensed electrician and must be located outside the restricted bathroom zones.

Step 1 — Mark the Wall

Hold the mounting template (included in the carton) against the wall at the desired height. Use a spirit level to confirm the template is plumb and level. Mark the fixing hole positions with a pencil. Mark the cable entry point if the mirror has a concealed cord exit.

Step 2 — Drill Fixing Holes

Drill at the marked positions using the correct bit for the substrate. For tiled walls, use a diamond-tipped tile drill bit at low speed with water cooling to prevent tile cracking. For plasterboard over timber stud, drill a pilot hole through plasterboard and into the stud centre. For hollow sections between studs, use the supplied hollow wall anchors rated to the mirror weight — confirm the anchor’s rated load is at least 1.5 times the mirror weight.

Step 3 — Install Wall Brackets

Insert rawl plugs or hollow-wall anchors into the drilled holes. Fix the wall bracket plates using the supplied M6 or M8 screws. Confirm bracket plates are flush and level before proceeding. Do not overtighten into hollow-wall anchors — finger-tight plus one quarter turn is sufficient for most plastic rawl plug types.

Step 4 — Route the Cord

Route the mirror’s power cord to the GPO outlet. If the cord runs behind the mirror, feed it through the wall chase or cable channel before hanging the mirror. Avoid visible cord runs on the tile surface — use a cable duct cover or route through the wall cavity if aesthetics require a concealed finish.

Step 5 — Hang the Mirror

Lift the mirror onto the wall brackets. For mirrors above 12kg, a second person is required during hanging. Confirm the mirror is seated correctly on all bracket points before releasing. Check level with a spirit level across the top edge.

Step 6 — Connect and Test

Plug the mirror cord into the GPO. Activate the touch sensor or wall switch to confirm LED illumination. Test the demister function if applicable. Confirm all control functions — CCT switching, brightness, demister — operate correctly before sign-off.

Installation Type 2 — Hardwire (Pigtail Connection)

Hardwire mirrors terminate in a pigtail — a short length of twin-and-earth or three-core flex extending from the mirror body. Connection to the building’s electrical circuit must be made by a licensed electrician. This is a legal requirement under AS/NZS 3000 across all Australian states and territories. For a plain-language explanation of when an electrician is required, refer to the electrician required guide.

Step 1 — Confirm Rough-In Position

Before hanging the mirror, confirm the rough-in cable exits the wall at the correct position — centred horizontally on the mirror and at the height specified on the product’s installation sheet. If the rough-in position is off by more than 20mm, the cable may not reach the mirror’s junction box without visible slack or insufficient strain relief.

Step 2 — Mark and Drill

Mark fixing hole positions using the supplied mounting template. Drill and install wall anchors or stud fixings as described in the plug-in steps above. For hardwire mirrors, confirm the cable route does not pass through the same hole as a structural fixing screw.

Step 3 — Install Brackets

Fix wall bracket plates as described above. Confirm level and plumb before proceeding to the electrical connection stage.

Step 4 — Electrician Connection

The licensed electrician draws the building circuit cable through to the junction box position. The mirror’s pigtail is joined to the building cable using approved connectors or junction box as specified by the electrician. Active, neutral, and earth conductors are connected in accordance with AS/NZS 3000. The electrician must issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety (or state equivalent) upon completion of the connection. This certificate is a handover document and should be filed with the project compliance records.

Step 5 — Hang and Secure

With the electrical connection made and the junction box secured behind the mirror, hang the mirror onto the wall brackets. Ensure the pigtail and junction box are fully recessed within the wall cavity or behind the mirror body — no electrical components should be exposed at the mirror-to-wall interface.

Step 6 — Energise and Test

The electrician energises the circuit and tests the mirror’s electrical functions — LED light, demister, and touch controls. Confirm no flickering, and confirm the demister warms to operating temperature within two minutes. Record the test on the Certificate of Electrical Safety. The mirror should not be handed over to the homeowner or building occupant until all electrical functions have been tested and documented.

Fixing Methods by Substrate

Timber Stud

Preferred fixing for mirrors up to any size. Use the supplied M6 x 50mm screws directly into stud centres. Pilot holes prevent stud splitting. For stud centres at 450mm or 600mm spacing, confirm that at least two bracket points align with a stud before ordering custom bracket configurations.

Steel Stud

Use self-tapping metal screws rated for the mirror weight. Avoid standard wood screws — thread engagement in steel stud is reduced and pull-out strength is lower. For mirrors above 15kg on steel stud, consider adding a horizontal ply backing strip between studs at the fixing height.

Masonry or Concrete

Use M6 or M8 masonry anchors — sleeve anchors, resin anchors, or mechanical expansion anchors depending on the wall material and load. Ensure drill depth is at least 50mm into the masonry substrate beyond any render coat. Confirm anchor pull-out rating exceeds 3x the mirror weight per fixing point.

Hollow Wall (between studs)

Use cavity wall anchors rated for the applied load. Toggler SNAP-SKRUs, metal toggle bolts, or resin-injected hollow-wall fixings are appropriate for lighter mirrors in non-stud positions. Confirm anchor rating. Avoid plastic snap-in anchors for mirrors above 8kg.

Post-Installation Checklist

Before project handover, confirm the following items are complete:

  • Mirror is level and plumb on the wall
  • All fixing points are secure — no movement when pressure is applied to mirror edges
  • LED illumination activates without flicker or delay
  • CCT switching functions correctly if tri-CCT model
  • Demister activates and reaches temperature within two minutes
  • No visible gap at mirror-to-wall interface that exposes electrical components
  • Cord or pigtail concealed — no exposed cable runs on wall surface
  • Certificate of Electrical Safety issued and filed (hardwire installations)
  • Mirror glass cleaned with microfibre — no tile adhesive, grout haze, or installation residue on glass surface
  • Warranty card and instruction sheet retained or passed to homeowner
