Do LED mirrors need to be hardwired?

Do LED mirrors need to be hardwired?

VUELUXE mirrors come with both options in the box — a 1.5m AU plug cord for GPO connection, and a hardwire pigtail. Plug-in requires a licensed electrician to install the GPO behind the mirror but does not require direct connection at the mirror itself. Hardwire has no visible cord and is the standard for luxury and hotel installations. Both are compliant. The choice is about aesthetics and the existing electrical layout of the bathroom.

How each connection type works

Plug-in (GPO): a licensed electrician installs a general purpose outlet (GPO) in the wall behind the mirror location. The GPO is positioned behind the mirror so it is not visible when the mirror is hung. The mirror plugs into the GPO using the 1.5m AU plug cord included in the box. The cord routes between the mirror backing board and the wall — it is not visible from the front. The switch on the cord controls the mirror power and CCT selection.

Hardwire: the mirror’s hardwire pigtail (a set of bare connection leads) is connected directly to the mains supply by a licensed electrician, typically via a junction box concealed behind the mirror or in the wall cavity. The switch is external — either a standard wall light switch near the vanity or a touch-sensor switch on the mirror face. No visible cord anywhere. The connection is permanent — the mirror cannot be unplugged without an electrician disconnecting it.

Licensing requirement — both options require a licensed electrician

In Australia, any work on mains-connected electrical fixtures in a bathroom requires a licensed electrician. This applies to both installation options:

  • GPO install: electrician installs the GPO at rough-in phase — this is mains electrical work and requires a licensed electrician and compliance certification
  • Hardwire: electrician connects the mirror at fit-out phase — this is direct connection to mains and requires a licensed electrician

The plug-in option does not mean the installation can be done by an unlicensed person. The mirror plugs into a GPO, but that GPO must be installed by a licensed electrician. See the electrician certification requirements page for a full summary of Australian bathroom electrical compliance requirements.

When to specify plug-in (GPO)

Plug-in is the simpler choice for:

  • Volume residential — one less electrician step at fit-out (mirror plugs in, no connection work required)
  • Renovation installs where there is already a GPO near the vanity that can be relocated or a new one added without major rework
  • Any installation where future mirror replacement may be required — the mirror can be unplugged and replaced without an electrician
  • Multi-unit projects where the electrician schedule is tight — plug-in mirrors can be installed by the builder after the electrician has completed the GPO, without needing the electrician back on site

The cord management behind the mirror is adequate with the 1.5m cord. The cord sits in the 15–25mm gap between the mirror backing board and the wall — it is not visible from the front. If the GPO position is well below the mirror (more than 1m), confirm the cord length is sufficient or a cord extension is in place before the mirror is hung.

When to specify hardwire

Hardwire is the correct specification for:

  • Luxury residential where no visible cord is a specification requirement
  • Hotel and hospitality where the bathroom is inspected and a visible cord would be flagged as a fit-out defect
  • Serviced apartments and short-stay properties where the bathroom may be accessed by guests who should not be able to disconnect the mirror
  • Any installation where the touch-sensor or wall-switch control is preferred over the inline cord switch

For hardwire installs, the switch arrangement needs to be decided at rough-in. If using a wall switch near the mirror, the switch circuit feeds the mirror directly — mark the switch position during rough-in. If using the touch-sensor on the mirror face, the hardwire connection provides continuous power and the touch-sensor controls the LED output — no wall switch required.

Rough-in requirements for both options

Regardless of which connection type is specified, the electrical rough-in point must be confirmed before tiling. Moving a GPO or conduit exit after tiles are installed is destructive and expensive. Mark the following during rough-in:

  • Mirror centre position on the wall (horizontal and vertical)
  • Mirror outline — so the GPO or conduit is confirmed to be within the mirror footprint
  • GPO height — typically 150–200mm above the mirror base height, centred horizontally on the vanity centre
  • For hardwire: conduit exit at same position as GPO would be, junction box depth in wall cavity

The full installation sequence — rough-in, tiling, fit-out — is documented in the VUELUXE installation guide. Electrician certification and compliance documentation requirements for Australian bathrooms are at electrician requirements.

Renovation installs — existing bathroom without a GPO behind the mirror

In a bathroom renovation where there is no existing GPO behind the mirror, a new GPO must be installed by a licensed electrician before the mirror can be hung. This is a standard electrician task and typically adds one hour of labour to the renovation. The alternative — routing a hardwire connection from an existing circuit — is often similar in labour. Confirm with the electrician which approach is more efficient given the existing electrical layout.

Summary

  • Both options (plug-in + hardwire) included in every VUELUXE mirror box
  • Both require a licensed electrician for installation — plug-in is not a DIY option in Australian bathrooms
  • Plug-in: simpler, faster install, allows future mirror replacement without electrician
  • Hardwire: no visible cord, hotel-spec standard, requires electrician at fit-out
  • Mark rough-in position before tiling — GPO or conduit must be within the mirror footprint
