LED mirror weight and wall fixing requirements
LED mirror weight and wall fixing requirements
VUELUXE mirrors range from 4.2kg (VLM-02) to 8.1kg (VLM-04 in maximum configuration). Timber stud fixing is always preferred. For plasterboard-only walls, use butterfly or toggle anchors rated to a minimum of 3× the mirror weight. VUELUXE mirror frames have integrated keyhole slots on the rear — no visible hardware, no additional backplate required.
Weight by model
- VLM-02 (700mm round): 4.2kg
- VLM-04 (700mm round): 4.2kg
- VLFR-01 (700×700mm round framed): 5.4kg
- VLM-07 (550×950mm arch): 5.1kg
These weights include the aluminium frame, glass, LED assembly, and backing board. The backing board adds the most mass relative to a frameless mirror of the same glass dimensions. Weight is relevant for selecting the correct fixing hardware and for confirming the wall structure can carry the load.
The 3× rule for anchor selection
The standard practice for hanging objects from plasterboard is to specify anchors rated to at least 3× the object weight. This provides a safety factor that accounts for dynamic load (the brief vibration when the mirror is touched or when a door closes nearby), installation variance (an anchor not fully seated), and wall deflection over time.
Applying this to VUELUXE mirrors:
- VLM-02 (4.2kg): anchors rated to minimum 12.6kg
- VLM-04 (6.8kg): anchors rated to minimum 20.4kg
- VLFR-01 (5.4kg): anchors rated to minimum 16.2kg
- VLM-07 (5.1kg): anchors rated to minimum 15.3kg
Standard butterfly anchors for 10–12mm plasterboard are rated 15–20kg in direct pull. For the VLM-04 on plasterboard only, use heavy-duty toggle anchors rated 25kg+ rather than standard butterfly anchors. If in doubt on the wall structure, drill to confirm stud position rather than defaulting to plasterboard anchors.
Stud fixing — why it is always preferred
Fixing to a timber stud eliminates the anchor load question entirely. A 65mm timber screw into a 90×45mm stud can carry 100kg+ in direct shear — the mirror weight is irrelevant relative to the capacity of a proper stud fix. The only variable is ensuring the fixing screws are the correct diameter and thread for the keyhole slot on the mirror frame.
VUELUXE keyhole slots accept M6 screws with a 12mm head diameter. The protruding screw from the wall should be set at approximately 5–7mm proud of the wall surface — enough for the keyhole slot to engage and seat fully. Both screws should be at identical height (use a spirit level or laser level) and at the correct horizontal spacing matching the keyhole positions on the specific mirror model.
Keyhole horizontal spacing by model: VLM-02 — 500mm centres; VLM-04 — 650mm centres; VLFR-01 — 600mm centres; VLM-07 — centred at top, single keyhole or two keyholes at 300mm centres. Confirm by measuring the actual mirror before drilling — keyhole positions are marked on the rear frame label.
When the stud does not align with the mirror position
Standard timber stud centres in Australian residential construction are 450mm or 600mm. Keyhole spacing on VUELUXE mirrors is designed to align with these centres where possible, but it is not guaranteed — the mirror position is determined by the vanity centre, not by the stud layout.
When the keyhole positions fall between studs, the options are:
- Install a horizontal timber nogging between studs at the required height — the cleanest solution, done during rough-in before lining
- Use heavy-duty plasterboard anchors rated to 3× mirror weight — acceptable for VLM-02, marginal for VLM-04, should be confirmed with an engineer for high-vibration environments
- Use a metal channel (Unistrut or similar) fixed to both studs, then attach the mirror fixing screws to the channel — an alternative for renovations where nogging is not possible
The preferred approach is a timber nogging installed during rough-in. Mark the mirror centre position on the wall before plasterboard is installed, then install nogging at the keyhole height. This is the standard practice for heavy wall-mounted items in new construction and it eliminates the anchor question entirely.
Wall types other than plasterboard
Tiled wet area walls (fibre cement + tiles over stud frame): fix to the stud through tile and substrate, using the correct tile drill bit and a screw rated for the combined substrate. Do not drill anchor holes into tile without confirming a stud is behind the tile — an anchor in tile over a cavity will not hold.
Solid masonry (brick, concrete, hebel): use wall plugs and screws rated for the masonry type. Masonry fixing into solid substrate is generally more reliable than plasterboard anchoring — confirmed masonry fix to solid material (not mortar joints) will carry any VUELUXE mirror weight without issue.
Electrical clearance and fixing position interaction
The fixing screws are behind the mirror. For GPO (plug-in) installs, the GPO sits behind the mirror as well — confirm the GPO is not positioned within the keyhole fixing zone. The GPO should be above or below the keyhole level, centred horizontally. For hardwire, the conduit exit should clear the keyhole positions and the mirror backing board outline. See the installation guide for dimension drawings showing the clearance zones for each model, and the specification hub for full technical data.
Summary
- VLM-02: 4.2kg — anchors rated to 12.6kg minimum, stud fix preferred
- VLM-04: 6.8kg — anchors rated to 20.4kg minimum, stud fix strongly preferred
- Keyhole slots on rear frame — M6 screw, 12mm head, 5–7mm proud of wall
- Install timber nogging at rough-in if keyhole positions fall between studs
- For plasterboard-only: heavy-duty toggle anchors, not standard butterfly anchors on VLM-04
