Do I need an electrician to install a plug-in LED mirror?

Yes — you need a licensed electrician to install a plug-in LED mirror. Specifically, the GPO (general power outlet — the power point the mirror plugs into) must be installed by a licensed electrician under AS/NZS 3000. The act of connecting the mirror’s plug to the GPO does not require a licence, but the GPO installation in a bathroom is electrical work and cannot be performed by an unlicensed person. The state compliance certificate — CES in Victoria, CCEW in Queensland, COC in NSW — covers the GPO installation and must be issued before the mirror is energised.

Why the plug-in distinction matters but does not change the requirement

Plug-in LED mirrors are often marketed with the implication that they are self-installable — “just plug it in.” That framing is misleading in the Australian context. The plug-in connection itself — inserting the cord into the GPO — is not electrical work and does not require a licence. But the following are electrical work and require a licensed electrician: installing a new GPO in the bathroom, relocating an existing GPO to the correct position for the mirror, replacing a non-compliant GPO, and confirming that the existing GPO is on an RCD-protected circuit.

For a new bathroom build, the GPO for a plug-in mirror must be installed during the electrical rough-in stage. The electrician installs the GPO at the correct height and position (typically inside the mirror cabinet or at mirror height on the adjacent wall). The GPO must be on an RCD-protected circuit under AS/NZS 3000. This is all done well before the mirror arrives on site.

For a mirror replacement in an existing bathroom

If a plug-in LED mirror is replacing a plain mirror in an existing bathroom with no power supply near the mirror, a new GPO must be installed — licensed electrician required. If an existing GPO is already present at the mirror location from a previous LED mirror installation, the new mirror can be plugged into the existing GPO. However, a licensed electrician should confirm: the existing GPO is in the correct zone position for the new mirror, the circuit is RCD-protected, and the GPO is in good condition and rated appropriately.

Engaging an electrician to inspect an existing GPO before installing a plug-in mirror is best practice, even if you are confident the existing installation is correct. The inspection is a minor cost. The compliance certificate issued by the electrician confirms the installation status and provides the property owner with current documentation.

The GPO position for plug-in mirrors

The GPO for a plug-in mirror should be positioned so the mirror cord is fully concealed. Common positions: inside the wall cavity behind the mirror (requires a knockout or slot in the mirror backing), inside a vanity cabinet directly below the mirror (cord runs behind the vanity), or at mirror height on the side wall (cord is concealed behind the mirror frame on the side). A visible dangling cord is not compliant with the aesthetic requirement and is a potential safety issue — cords should not hang in front of water splash areas.

The electrician should know the mirror model’s cord length and the preferred cord entry point before setting out the GPO position. VUELUXE provides model-specific rough-in notes for licensed electricians. For plug-in models, the cord length is typically 600mm — the GPO must be within that distance of the mirror’s cord entry point.

Zone considerations for GPO placement

Under AS/NZS 3000, the zone requirements apply to the GPO as well as the mirror. A GPO must not be installed in Zone 1 (above the bath or shower). In Zone 2 (600mm from the bath/shower boundary), a shaver supply unit (an isolated transformer GPO designed for bathroom use) may be used. A standard 240V GPO may only be installed outside Zone 2. The electrician is responsible for confirming the zone position of the GPO before installation.

For most bathroom mirror installations, the mirror and GPO are outside Zone 2 — on the wall opposite or adjacent to the shower, more than 600mm from the shower zone boundary. If the bathroom is small and the mirror is positioned within 600mm of the shower, the electrician needs to assess the zone carefully. This is a standard part of bathroom electrical rough-in planning.

What the compliance certificate covers

The compliance certificate issued by the electrician for a plug-in mirror installation covers: the GPO installation (including RCD protection confirmation), zone compliance, and the electrical work involved. It does not cover the mirror product itself — product compliance is the RCM certification. Together, the RCM certificate for the mirror and the compliance certificate for the installation constitute the full compliance documentation set for the bathroom inspection.

Keep both documents — the VUELUXE RCM certificate (available from the trade portal) and the electrician’s compliance certificate. For commercial projects, the project documentation set should include both. For residential projects, both should be provided to the homeowner at settlement as part of the fixtures documentation.
