Does an LED bathroom mirror need an electrician to install?

Yes — always. An LED bathroom mirror requires a licensed electrician to install, regardless of whether it is a plug-in or hardwire model. Even a plug-in mirror requires a licensed electrician to install the GPO (power point) that the mirror plugs into. Under AS/NZS 3000 (the Australian wiring rules), no electrical work in a bathroom may be performed by an unlicensed person. The compliance certificate for the installation — whether a CES in Victoria, CCEW in Queensland, or COC in NSW — is issued by the licensed electrician and must be retained by the property owner.

Why the plug-in versus hardwire distinction does not change the requirement

A common misconception is that plug-in mirrors are DIY-installable because connecting the plug to the GPO does not require a licence. That part is correct — plugging a cord into a power point does not require a licence. But installing the GPO itself is electrical work. Under AS/NZS 3000, the installation of any socket outlet in a bathroom is electrical work that must be performed by a licensed electrical contractor.

In practice, this means the GPO behind or beside the mirror must be installed by a licensed electrician before the mirror is hung. The plug-in connection of the mirror cord is not the electrical work — the rough-in of the GPO is. If the GPO already exists from a previous installation and the mirror is simply being replaced, a licensed electrician is still recommended to confirm the existing GPO is compliant with zone requirements for the mirror’s position.

Hardwire installations

Hardwire mirrors terminate directly into the electrical circuit — there is no cord, no plug, no GPO. The electrician connects the mirror’s supply cable to a junction box or conduit terminal behind the mirror. This is unambiguously electrical work requiring a licensed contractor. The electrician also installs the wall switch or confirms the touch sensor on the mirror will serve as the switching mechanism.

For hardwire installations, the electrician must be engaged during rough-in — before tiling. The conduit and junction box position must be confirmed against the mirror model’s cable entry point. On VUELUXE hardwire models, the cable entry is at the bottom centre of the mirror backing or at the bottom left corner, depending on model. The electrician should have the mirror model specification before rough-in begins.

AS/NZS 3000 bathroom zone requirements

AS/NZS 3000 divides the bathroom into zones based on proximity to water. Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower. Zone 1 is immediately above the bath or shower to 2250mm height. Zone 2 extends 600mm horizontally from the Zone 1 boundary. Mirrors are almost always in Zone 2 or outside zones entirely, which is why IP44 is the standard minimum requirement.

The electrician is responsible for confirming zone classification and ensuring the mirror’s IP rating is appropriate for the installation position. A VUELUXE IP44-rated mirror installed in Zone 2 meets the standard. If a mirror were positioned closer to the shower — within Zone 1 — an IP44 rating would not be sufficient and a different product would be required.

State compliance certificates

Each Australian state and territory requires a compliance certificate for electrical work in bathrooms. The format varies by state:

  • Victoria: Certificate of Electrical Safety (CES) — issued by the licensed electrician to the property owner.
  • Queensland: Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) — issued by the licensed electrical contractor.
  • New South Wales: Certificate of Compliance (COC) — issued by the licensed electrical contractor.
  • Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, ACT, NT: each state has equivalent documentation requirements. The licensed electrician in that state will know the local requirement.

The compliance certificate is the property owner’s proof that the electrical installation meets the wiring rules. It is required for building inspection sign-off, may be required for insurance claims, and should be retained for the life of the property. A bathroom renovation without a compliance certificate is an undisclosed defect on the property title.

What the electrician needs from the builder

To install a VUELUXE LED bathroom mirror, the electrician needs: the mirror model (to confirm cable entry location and wattage), the installation type (plug-in or hardwire), the mirror position on the wall (marked on tile layout drawing or set out by the builder), and whether a demister is included (affects circuit load). VUELUXE provides model-specific installation notes for licensed electricians on request through the trade portal.

For hardwire models, the electrician also needs the backing plate dimensions to confirm the conduit termination lands within the mirror footprint. This information is on the VUELUXE spec sheet for each model.

Consequences of unlicensed installation

An LED bathroom mirror installed without a licensed electrician has no compliance certificate. This creates three immediate risks. First, a building inspection will fail if the certifier identifies the absence of a certificate. Second, any fire or electrical damage claim will be reviewed by the insurer for compliance — an unlicensed installation voids cover. Third, a builder who uses unlicensed electrical work on a project carries defect liability for the full defects liability period and potentially beyond.

For trade buyers, the simplest rule is: every mirror installation on every project gets a licensed electrician. The cost of the electrician is a line item in the project cost plan. The cost of a failed inspection, an insurance void, or a liability claim is orders of magnitude higher.
