How high to mount an LED bathroom mirror?

The centre of an LED bathroom mirror should be mounted at 1700–1750mm above finished floor level (FFL). This height suits the average adult standing user and also accommodates a seated wheelchair user, satisfying both standard residential practice and AS 1428.1 accessibility requirements where applicable. For a round mirror, the centre is the geometric centre of the circle. For an oval or arch-top mirror, centre is measured at the horizontal midpoint of the overall height. Adjust up to 1800mm maximum for households with consistently taller occupants.

How to calculate the mounting position

Once you have determined the centre height (1725mm is a practical mid-point), calculate the top and bottom of the mirror. For an 800mm high mirror: top edge = 1725 + 400 = 2125mm from FFL. Bottom edge = 1725 − 400 = 1325mm from FFL. Mark both points on the tile or wall surface with a pencil line before drilling.

The keyhole slots or bracket points on VUELUXE mirrors are located near the top of the mirror backing. Measure the slot position from the top of the mirror (typically 40–60mm from the top edge depending on model), subtract that from your top-edge height to get the screw/anchor height. For example: top edge at 2125mm, keyhole slot 50mm from top = screw height at 2075mm from FFL. Mark and drill at that height.

Considerations by mirror shape

Rectangle mirrors: the centre is straightforward — half the height above the bottom edge. An 700×700mm mirror has its centre at 400mm from the bottom. Mark the bottom edge height first (1725 − 400 = 1325mm from FFL), then mark the top (1325 + 800 = 2125mm from FFL).

Round mirrors: the geometric centre is the centre of the circle. A 750mm diameter round mirror has its centre at the midpoint of the circle. Mount so the centre of the circle is at 1725mm from FFL. Top of mirror = 1725 + 375 = 2100mm. Bottom of mirror = 1725 − 375 = 1350mm.

Arch-top and oval mirrors: the recommended approach is to treat the overall height as you would a rectangle and centre at the midpoint. An arch mirror 900mm wide and 1100mm high has a centre at 550mm from the bottom. Mount so that midpoint is at 1725mm. Bottom edge = 1725 − 550 = 1175mm from FFL. Top of arch = 1725 + 550 = 2275mm from FFL. Confirm the top height clears the ceiling, tile layout, or cornice before committing to the position.

Relationship to vanity height

Standard Australian vanity bench height is 850mm from FFL. The gap between the vanity top and the bottom of the mirror is a design decision — typical residential practice is 150–250mm of tile visible below the mirror. With a 1325mm bottom-of-mirror height and an 850mm bench, the tile reveal is 475mm — wider than typical but not unusual for tall mirrors. Adjust centre height down to 1650mm if a shorter reveal is preferred, giving a bottom edge of 1250mm and a tile reveal of 400mm.

For small powder room mirrors (e.g. 500×400mm), the same centre height applies — the mirror is simply shorter and the bottom edge will be higher. A 500mm-high mirror centred at 1725mm has a bottom edge at 1475mm, well above the typical vanity and creating a larger tile reveal. This is a designer choice — adjust height to suit.

Accessibility compliance (commercial and multi-residential)

For commercial buildings, Class 2 multi-residential, and aged care where AS 1428.1 accessibility requirements apply, the bottom of the reflective surface must be no more than 900mm from FFL for accessible bathrooms. A 600mm high mirror centred at 1725mm has a bottom edge at 1425mm — too high for the accessible requirement. For accessible bathrooms, lower the mirror so the bottom edge is at 900mm from FFL. This places the centre of a 600mm high mirror at 1200mm from FFL — lower than typical but compliant.

Check the project’s accessibility requirements before setting out mirror positions. An accessible bathroom mirror position is typically noted on the architect’s drawings for commercial and multi-residential projects.

Setting out for multiple mirrors on the same vanity

For dual-vanity bathrooms with two mirrors side by side, mount both mirrors at the same centre height — consistent top and bottom edges. Centre each mirror horizontally over its respective basin. The horizontal gap between mirrors should be consistent with the tile grout joint pattern where possible — typically 10–20mm.

For a single wide mirror over a double vanity, the single centre height applies. The mirror is sized to span both basins, typically 1200–1800mm wide, and centred on the vanity run. Mark the centre of the vanity width first, then mark left and right edges from that centreline.

The keyhole slot system on VUELUXE mirrors

VUELUXE mirrors use a keyhole slot mounting system — two screws into the wall, the mirror slides down and locks. This system allows fine lateral adjustment of up to 15mm after installation and vertical adjustment of up to 10mm by changing the screw depth. If the mirror is slightly off-level after hanging, the keyhole system allows correction without redrilling. Use a spirit level across the top edge of the mirror after hanging to confirm level before the electrician connects.
