How do I store mirrors on-site before installation?
Store mirrors flat, glass face up, in original packaging, in a dry covered location. Do not stack more than 3 cartons high. Do not store in direct sunlight or near heat sources — the adhesive on the protective backing film can soften above 50°C, potentially bonding the film to the glass face. Keep mirrors away from foot traffic and power tools. Ideal on-site storage is inside a lockable room or site container, flat on pallets, away from the perimeter where wall work and tool use occurs.
Why proper storage matters
A mirror that arrives undamaged can be damaged in storage. The most common causes of storage damage on construction sites are: cartons stacked too high collapsing under vibration from nearby construction activity, cartons stored on uneven surfaces that flex and transfer stress to the glass, heat exposure from direct sun or nearby heating equipment softening the backing adhesive, and site traffic — forklifts, wheelbarrows, and building materials placed against or on top of mirror cartons.
Storage damage that occurs after delivery and is not reported within the 14-day no-form replacement window requires a standard warranty assessment. Prevention is significantly cheaper than the delay and cost of a warranty replacement, particularly on projects with tight completion dates.
Stacking limits
Three cartons high is the maximum stack height for VUELUXE mirror cartons. The carton base is rated for the compressive load of two additional cartons — a three-high stack keeps the base carton within its rated load. Beyond three high, the base carton deforms, transferring load to the mirror frame and potentially to the glass. The carton compression limit is printed on the VUELUXE carton base — look for the stacking symbol and maximum load in kilograms.
For large mirrors (1200mm and above), limit stacking to two high. The carton for large mirrors is heavier and the compressive load on the base carton in a three-high stack exceeds the rated limit. When in doubt, two high is safe for all sizes.
Temperature and humidity requirements
Store mirrors in an environment that stays below 50°C and above 5°C. In practice, the upper limit is the relevant one for Australian construction sites — a closed metal shipping container or a room with a north-facing window can exceed 50°C on summer days. At these temperatures, the adhesive on the protective film softens and can bond to the glass face, creating marks that are difficult or impossible to remove without damaging the reflective coating.
The other heat risk is to the LED driver — a sealed driver exposed to extended high temperatures can degrade before installation. Store mirrors out of direct sun and away from site heaters used during cooler months. A shaded, ventilated storage location is preferable to a sealed room with no air movement.
Humidity: VUELUXE mirror cartons include moisture-absorbing desiccant packets. These protect the mirror during sea freight and local storage. For extended on-site storage (more than 4 weeks), check that the storage location does not have standing water, leaking roof points, or condensation on the floor that could saturate the carton base. A wet carton base loses compressive strength — a three-high stack on a wet base is not safe.
Keeping mirrors away from site activity
The most common cause of construction site mirror damage is proximity to other work. Angle grinder sparks, cutting dust, concrete splatter, and paint overspray can all damage a mirror stored in packaging — the carton protects the glass face but not necessarily the frame if it protrudes from the top of an open or damaged carton. Keep mirrors behind a physical barrier or in a separate lockable room away from the main construction activity.
Mark the storage location clearly. Cartons that are not labelled as fragile may be moved by other trades who do not know what is inside. VUELUXE cartons are marked with fragile and this-way-up symbols — ensure these face outward and are visible in the storage location. Brief the site foreman on the storage requirements when mirrors are delivered.
Pallet storage
Store cartons on pallets rather than directly on a concrete slab. Pallets provide two benefits: they elevate the cartons above any floor moisture, and they allow a forklift or pallet jack to move the mirrors without manual handling. For large orders, VUELUXE delivers on pallets — request that the delivery driver leave the pallets in the designated storage location rather than at the building entrance.
Pallets should be on a level surface. An uneven pallet surface causes carton corners to carry load unevenly, which can transfer a point load to the glass inside the carton. If the storage floor is uneven, level the pallet with packing before stacking cartons.
Timing of delivery on construction projects
The ideal delivery timing for mirrors on a construction project is 1–2 weeks before the installation date — not at the start of the fit-out stage. Mirrors delivered at the start of fit-out may sit on-site for 4–8 weeks while other wet area and joinery work is completed. Each additional week of on-site storage is an additional week of exposure to the risks above.
If the construction programme requires early delivery (for example, to secure stock ahead of a price increase or to avoid a restock delay), ensure the storage location is a lockable, dry, covered room away from active construction zones. Do not store mirrors in a bathroom that is still being tiled — wet area work and mirror storage in the same space is a high-risk combination.
